Maybelline: The Smokes - Quick Swatches

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Hey guys! I know a lot of you have seen and gotten your hands on the new Maybelline - The Nudes palette, but have you gotten The Smokes? The last one on my list to get is The Brights, which my Walgreens did not have. I did buy The Nudes and The Smokes [the last 2 on the display] for BOGO 50% off which was great. I also got some bonus points on my Walgreens rewards card. Anyway, I wanted to show you some quick swatches of this palette. I can't wait to play around with this and create some smokey looks!

There are 12 colors in this palette that contain a few matte shades but mostly shimmers. I like the variety of base colors, silvers, and the darker blues/purples.

I've split my swatches up into 2 parts - top row and bottom row. Overall I like the performance of these shadows when just doing these basic arm swatches. I do feel like the top row is not as pigmented as the bottom row, but you also have VERY shimmery and metallic shades on the bottom row.

The top row of this palette is your "base" row. These are good for starting out your smokey look and even carving out your crease. The first and last shades are also good for smoking out your outer corners. That's how I see myself using this palette anyway.

The bottom row I'd use mostly for my "lid colors" because there are 3 very shimmery shades that would work perfectly. The 4th shade in could also be use as an inner corner highlight.

For basically $8.99, this palette is great to take on the go or even when you're traveling. It's compact enough and there are a good variety of shades. Even if you didn't want to do a smokey look there are enough neutral shades in this palette to do a very natural look.

Let me know if you want me to do a similar review on The Nudes palette or if you've seen enough, haha.

Make sure you check out your local Walgreens or Target to get this palette.

  3. You know what...I hope I can find this because I am definitely grabbing it. I didn't get the nudes palette, which I went back and forth on. I love neutrals, but I already have so many palettes like that. It seemed like the pigment wasn't great. This however looks different enough to justify a purchase. Like how I rationalize that?? I can pretty much talk myself into buying anything lol...

  4. Have the nudes and like it a lot. Bought the brights the other day and it was beyond horrible. Talk about no pigmentation. So bad it went back to Target. It's too bad because I really wanted to like it. Just bought the smokes on Ebay because I could not find it in my area at all. I sure hope it is as good as the nudes. Thanks for the review and the swatches!
